The spindles are made of solid black walnut, which is not commercially available; it's highly valuable and one of the most sought-after of the native hardwoods. Each spindle has an octagonal-shaped top and shaft, with lovely turned portions in between and at the bottom. The shafts have 8 carved flutes (routed grooves). Eight are stained and finished with a dark stain color, and have squared tendons on top. 3 of these are about 30" in length and 5 are about 27". 12 are painted a dark brown color and do not have tendons on top. Not including the round, bottom ends which vary in length; all 12 painted spindles are the same length. Two of the painted round ends are broken significantly shorter than the rest. Considering that these spindles are over 160 years old, they are in amazing condition! They have nicks, scrapes, and scratches, but no rot, wrap, or breaks other than the 2 bottom ends mentioned above. Victorian spindles with this design and made of black walnut are almost impossible to find. Once these are gone, you may never get another chance--don't miss out!
