The claims location is on the East Fork Eagle Creek. Eagle Creek District The Eagle Creek district is in the southern end of the Wallowa Mountains. The boundaries of this district overlap those of the Cornucopia district, and rightly so, for the gold- bearing gravels of the Eagle Creek district were derived from the Cornucopia stock. Mining began in this district in the early 1860's when placers along Eagle Creek were worked. Those along Paddy Creek were worked also, but most of the gold production was from lodes and some was a byproduct of copper ore. The Sanger mine, the largest producer in the district, yielded an estimated $11.2 million in gold from auriferous quartz veins. The total early production of the district was estimated at $1,687,400 (about 82,000 ounces) in gold. This district includes practically all of the drainage of Eagle Creek, together with the territory south and west of Sanger, which slopes towards lower Powder River and is drained by Balm and Goose Creeks. The elevation varies from 3500 feet on the lower creeks to 8000 feet on East Eagle Creek. Practically the entire district is covered with timber; only occasional small areas are barren. The steep slopes and high ridges which form the upper drainage area of Eagle Creek are made up of various sediments and old volcanic flows in considerable complexity. The lower foothills from near Sparta west to North Powder, where they are not covered by Columbia basalt, are seen to be made up almost entirely of greenstones. The country rock of the area is chiefly Triassic greenstone and limestone cut by granitic and diabasic dikes. The veins contain pyrite, chalcopyrite, shpalerite, galena and free gold in a gangue of quartz and some calcite. Eagle Creek is an important stream with several branches that head far back into the Wallowa range. Upon these, several branches which reach even to the western limits of the Cornucopia mining district are many quartz veins and placer deposits. The two branches of Eagle Creek which have received the most attention in lode and placer mining are East Eagle and Paddy creeks. The placer mines of Eagle creek have been worked since the late 1860’s and each summer some placer mining is done. There are benches of heavy gravel up to 100 feet above the stream. These benches have been worked to some degree from below the mouth of Paddy creek to a few miles upstream beyond the mouth of East Eagle creek. Our 20-acre placer mining claim is located a few miles Nothwest Backer City a large town. This drainage has had abundant placer mining history from both bedrock and older Tertiary gravel deposits from the Creek. Some of the amenities are: Short walk to creek. Local gravels on bedrock.
