Item:132834208979Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a beautiful English early 19th Century Regency rosewood tea caddy box with fitted interior, c. 1800-1820. This attractive tea caddy has a sarcophagus shaped body with pyramid shaped lid. The fitted interior is intact with two tea compartments with lids. The top has an inlaid band in the center of the front, back and both sides. The banding is possibly silver, however, it has years of aging and we don't want to alter the finish. On top of the box is a raised rectangular design with egg and dart banding. Box has brass locking mechanism with tight hinge and the lid opens and closes properly. There is a mother-of-pearl insert around the key hold. Box sits on four flattened round feet. Due to the high cost of tea during this period, tea was a luxury item and necessitated a secure container for the storage and security thereof. Tea caddys were made of many different materials including Sterling Silver and papier mache, however, wooden boxes were the most common and the finest furniture makers were enlisted to produce these fabulous boxes, each of which reflected the cabinetmaker's finest workmanship. Measures 5 1/2" high (to edge of lid), approximately 6 1/2" high (to top of lid), 8" long and 5" wide. Weighs 1.8 pounds. This nice box is in very good to excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws reflecting only minor signs of normal wear commensurate with age.
