Norwegian-America Cruise Line - SS Stavangerfjord - Art Print The SS Stavangerfjord (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Stavangerfjord_(1918)) was the queen of the Atlantic. Many emigrants from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, England and Ireland travelled on the M/S Stavangerfjord to the US and Canada. The Stavangerfjord was built in May 1917 at Birkenhead, England, but poor economic times hurt her owner, The Norwegian American Line. NAL, formally established Aug. 27-1910, owned 19 ships and had become one of the largest Norwegian shipping companies. In the mid twenties, Stavangerfjord was utilized as a cruise boat to North Cape and around the Norwegian Fjords. During the war, Stavangerfjord was anchored up outside Oslo. Requisitioned by the German Kriegsmarine in 1940, the ship was planned to be rebuilt as a hospital. The rebuilding was not carried out, and she remained at the berth in Oslo as a troop depot ship. Stavangerfjord re-entered the transatlantic run as soon as hostilities ended in 1945. She was at first used as repatriation ship, then overhauled and put back on the New York run, operating in this service alone until 1949 when the new Osloford entered service. Stavangerfjord was finally sold as scrap in 1964 after 45 years on the sea, and broken up in Hong Kong. During this time she had crossed the Atlantic 768 times and had carried more than 400.000 passengers.
