This outstanding mid 20th century Pipestone Carved Pipe Bowl measures approx. 11 1/2" long overall and 5 3/4” tall weighing over 4 ½ pounds. It features a stunningly beautiful, full figured Bison standing atop the throat of the bowl and a cylindrical, upright bowl. The Buffalo features inlaid eyes made of tiny, red white heart seed beads and originally had attached horns (which are lacking). The surface of the Bowl is engraved with floral and bird form images and the Bowl carries the pictograph and lettered signature of the carver – a large “broken arrow” and text that reads “Broken Arrow”. We have never come across a catlinite Pipe Bowl of this monumental size and the example offered here is a wonderful display piece. The Pipe retains its original, monumental size, carved and decorated wood stem. The stem measures 28” long and overall the Pipe measures 38” long. The stem features carved and paint decorated rings and surface texturing of various kinds. The Stem also retains its original bead decorated, hide attachment with fringe. This very rare and very beautiful, ca1970’s Northern Plains / Sioux Catlinite Pipe is in very good condition. The Pipe Bowl is well preserved with no damage or repairs of any kind but with some surface soiling. As stated above the Buffalo figure retains its original red white heart seed bead inlaid eyes but lacks the original attached horns. It is carved from a single, massive piece of Pipestone and is very impressive.
