A soft cover booklet, it has a beautiful color design on the front showing a Native American scene. It was a typical Almanac, containing advertising for Swamp-Root medicine, but also an almanac, diet suggestions, tips for etiquette, a time table for sowing and planting your garden, and a guide for interpreting dreams. The booklet was distributed by Belt's pharmacy in Newport Oregon. The book is in very good condition... the cover quite bright...a bit of chipping on the edges of the covers. The corners inside and out are dogeared. The inside pages are slightly yellowed and slightly dogeared but the booklet itself is sound, and the pages are clean and easy to read. Rare and original "1936 Swamp-Root Dream Book Almanac - Dr. Kilmer & Co. Binghamton N.Y." It is a soft cover booklet, has a beautiful color design on the front showing a Native American scene. It measures 8" x 5-5/8" (20.5 cm x 14.5 cm) with 36 pages including the covers.Being that it was a typical Almanac of the time, not only did it contain advertising for Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root medicine, it also contained an almanac for each month of the year. Plus it gave lots of useful information, such as an anatomical diagram supposedly showing how the Swamp-Root medicine worked, diet suggestions, and "medical" warnings for people of middle- and old age,It even contains a list of proper etiquette for American society, and it talks about physical characteristics of the human body and what that tells about your character. In addition they have a sowing and planting schedule to make sure that you get the most out of the plants and vegetables in your garden.There is a drawing on the back cover showing the Dr. Kilmer building in Binghamton, New York, which held a complete medical laboratory, devoted exclusively to the manufacturing of Dr. Kilmer's medicines.This unique and intriguing booklet has the name Belt's pharmacy stamped on it, and advertises that they sell drugs medicines, perfumes, toilet articles, soaps, brushes, combs and a full line of druggist sundries. They were located in Newport Oregon.The book is in very good condition. The cover is still quite bright. There's a little bit of chipping on the edges of the covers, and both corners are dogeared. There's a purposely drilled hole in the upper left-hand corner, which has an attached string in it, so that people could hand it on the wall or some other device for keeping it handy. The inside pages are slightly yellowed and slightly dogeared but the booklet itself is sound, and the pages are clean and easy to read.So who was Dr. Kilmer, what was Swamp-Root Medicine, and what was it good for, why was it called a Dream Book? It was called a Dream Book, because it contained 3 pages and a lengthy list of suggestions about how to interpret dreams.The indications for the used of this product was a diuretic for the kidneys and a mild laxative. Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root medicine began to be used in the mid-1870s. By 1985 the Dr. Kilmer line consisted of 18 different herbal medicines. They offer free trial of their medicines to physicians.Swamp-Root medicine declined after the implementation of the 1906 pure food and drug act, which required products to be tested and demanded honest labeling. Unless you could prove that your medicine worked and cured the ailment in the advertising, it would be prohibited by law to sell it.Medical experts at the time regarded Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root medicine as pure quackery, potentially dangerous, and lacking any evidence that it cure any disease of the kidney or liver.However this little booklet is full of information that would've been considered valuable to some people in 1936.Fascinating and original "1936 Swamp-Root Dream Book Almanac - Dr. Kilmer & Co.
