F. W. Fletcher was a chemist of some repute, a Member of the Society of Chemical Industry since its foundation in 1881 and a Fellow of the Chemical Society. His Tonic Wine business was established in 1898 and Fletcher pioneered the preparation of concentrated liquors for chemical syrups and tinctures. In his research and development processes Fletcher secured several patents for laboratory equipment and it was claimed (in his obituary) that by 1915 his laboratories were engaged in research work of national importance. In addition to his work as a manufacturing chemist Fletcher held governorships of the Middlesex and Great Northern Hospitals and was Chairman of the Enfield Cottage Hospital.
