Description Up for auction we have a 1932 first edition printing of “George Washington and the Negro” by Walter H. Mazyck.  Hardcover, 180 pages.  Measures 7-1/2” tall by 5-1/4” wide.

From nytimes.com –

“ A NEW and very interesting exposition of the development of George Washington is presented in this book, that of the gradual evolution of his attitude toward slavery Mr. Mazyck follows it carefully from his boyhood till his death, with much quoted material from Washington's journals and letters and from his biographers, and with constant reference in comment and explanation to the central thread of his exposition.”

Book has the personal bookplate of civil right author Lawrence J. W. Hayes.  Mr. Hayes work included a 1941 study on “The Negro Federal Government Worker, 1933-1938”.  Mr. Hayes’ study showed that of over 8,000 black federal workers, 90% were custodial while .5% were scientific or professional.

Book is in good condition showing wear consistent with age, usage and storage.  Cover in good condition with rubbing wear to the corners and discoloration to the spine cover.  Pages in good condition except a number of pages up to page 10 have areas of green underlining.  After page 10, there is no more underlining.  There is also some staining to the outside page edges on the right side near the end of the book.  Binding in very good condition.
