Haile Selassie I, also known as Ras Tafari, was the emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. Born July 23, 1892, he is considered an emblematic figure in the history of Africa and the Rastafari movement. He became famous worldwide for his opposition to the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935–1936, which led to his flight into exile. However, he returned to Ethiopia after World War II and was restored to the throne.
As emperor, Haile Selassie undertook modernizing reforms in Ethiopia, particularly in the areas of education, infrastructure and governance. He also played an important role in promoting African unity and establishing the Organization of African Unity (OAU), today the African Union (AU).
Religiously, Hailé Selassié was considered by some members of the Rastafari movement as the reincarnation of Christ and as a spiritual leader. His reign ended in 1974 when he was overthrown in a military coup, ending the Ethiopian monarchy. He died in 1975, although the exact circumstances of his death remain controversial. Despite the end of his political reign, Haile Selassie continues to be revered and celebrated around the world for his influence on African history and culture.
