In 1870 in Leroy, NY, Schuler C. Wells produced a line of “Shiloh Family Remedies” and his business became known as S. C. Wells & Co.   In 1873, he introduced Shiloh’s Consumption Cure , for those afflicted with tuberculosis. It was known to contain heroin or morphine so the “cure” was probably temporary at best, but it became a huge success.

Wells changed the name at various times. Shiloh’s Consumption Cure became Shiloh’s Consumption Remedy and eventually after pressure from critics and leading up to the Food and Drug Act of 1907 changed again to simple Shiloh’s Cure , dropping any reference to Consumption. However, in 1909, The Journal of the American Medical Association warned that it was still one of many medicines with “habit forming drugs.”

THIS bottle is unusual in that it drops any reference to Shiloh or Consumption or Remedy or Cure. I have not been able to identify what it contained, but do know it was manufactured after the Food and Drug Act came down so hard on unsubstantiated labeling/embossing; it is machine-made, with the main panel simply embossed S. C. WELLS & CO/LEROY, N.Y. with one side panel embossed with ESTABLISHED and the other with IN 1870. It has a small embossing of 2 OZ on the shoulder of the reverse side panel and the number 5 on the base.

If you are a Shiloh collector or from the Leroy area, this bottle might be a nice addition to your collection as there are not many of them available. It is free of cracks or chips, very clean, and in great condition for a 100-year-old bottle.
