We are pleased to present this 18th century American Amputation Saw for your consideration. It comes to us from the hit Travel Channel reality TV show Baggage Battles. Although Laurence and Sally Martin of Studio Antiques bid on the Saw, it was won by their rival Billy Leroy. He however graciously made a side deal with Laurence later, which is how it comes to us here at Studio Antiques. You'll see the Saw prominently featured on the episode "Blast From The Past" (s02e02 in Boston), and we've included some clips from the episode in our pictures. The episode shows it being taken to an appraiser, who was able to identify it for Billy. The Saw has a hand forged iron frame, turned maple grip, and brass ferrule and end cap. It measures 19-1/4 inches in overall length and weighs 1 pound 2 ounces. There are no markings on the metal surfaces, but we did find a mark on the wood which looks hand carved. As best we can tell, it reads A. LILY, but see our close up picture (#7) as the text is difficult to fully decipher. Metal surfaces show only slight surface rust, while the old scratches and imperfections in the wood have developed a rich natural patina. There are no significant flaws or issues with this piece, and we rate its overall condition as very good. Rarely seen outside of museums and the better private collections, this is a superb example of an antique American Amputation Saw, and would be a wonderful addition to your antique medical collection! Condition: There are no significant flaws or issues with this piece, and we rate its overall condition as very good.
