1896 SPANISH "Colonial" PUERTO RICO now USA >10 CENTAVOS< Rare ONLY YEAR STRUCK

Description This is a very rare coin. A single year type, it was struck at the Valencia mint in Spain in 1896 for the then Spanish "Colonial" Island of Puerto Rico. Discovered by Columbus in 1943, Puerto Rico remains the only United States land he ever set foot on. The first settlement was established by Ponce de Leon in 1508.
 
Puerto Rico, or "Rich Port" was seeded to the United States by Spain after the "Spanish-American" War of 1898. In 1895 Spain had struck 20 Centavos pieces and One Peso coins for the island. Then in 1896 they struck 5, 10 and 40 Centavo coins. They are the only Spanish coinage ever struck for this American Island.

Obverse: ALFONSO XIII P. L. G. D. D. REY C. DE ESPAÑA Alfonso XIII, by the grace of God, Constitutional King of Spain • 1896 • Bust of the young boy, Alfonso left.
 
"Alfonso XII" his Father, was King of Spain but died from tuberculosis on November 25, 1885, at the age of just 27. After he died his widow gave birth to a son, "Alfonso XIII", here, who became King at birth.
 
 
Reverse: ISLA DE PUERTO RICO • PG • 10 CENTAVOS • V • The P & G are for the assayers Felix Miguel Peiro Rodrigo and Antonio Garcia Gonzalez. The V (in Spain) is the Valencia mint mark. Spanish Arms.
 
Crowned Coat of Arms showing the Lion of Leon, the Castle of Castile, the Vertical Bars of the Crown of Aragon and the Chains of Navarre all surmounted by the Lilies of the House of Bourbon (added after the War of the Spanish Succession). The Pomegranate at the bottom is for Granada. Between Two Pillars representing the Pillars of Hercules (The Straits of Gibraltar) with a Ribbon on them reading PLVS VLTRA (meaning “More Beyond”).
 
The Coin: A nice example of a scarce and desirable coin from what is now part of the United States. It passed through many hands and earned marks, wear and dirt doing it. One of the hands it passed through cleaned it. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
