S. MERRELL CHEMICAL CO. MANUFACTURING CHEMISTS" CINNCINATI, OHIO. This American Antique Apothecary Medicine glass Bottle 1880s period in American Apothecary Medicine was produced when pharmacists and doctors were researching and finding their way through new discoveries and new pathways in medicines, herbs, extracts, and discoveries. William Stanley Merrell MD. the first began the company, and was an Early 1800s period American pharmacist and chemist who was a research scientist & who had discovered Podophyllin in 1847 which was a substitute for Calomel. He was the first American Pharmacologist and mercantile trade merchant of new "officinal extracts" and wondrous herbal extracts of resinous pharmacopeia compounds to be sold commercially in the United States. Merrell manufactured eclectic medicines derived from roots, leaves and herbs from both America and from Europe. He was the President of The Eclectic Medicine College and a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association. Merrell opened his apothecary business firm in 1828 in Cincinnati Ohio. The father's firm's name is located on the foront paper label as well out of respect and I imagine as a reference point as well under the son's present company name (see front label in pics provided). It states "Late Wm. S. Merrell & Co." which was the father's company name, I think this is a very charming attribute to the bottle and provides a historical perspective to the company as well. Both labels are original and securely fixed as original on bottle, they show some expected darkening from natural age and some small bits of paper loss on back and very tiny bit of loss on label front edge (see pics), very complete and displayable. The neck of the glass bottle is lovely with a wrinkled neck that is charming and true to age of antique bottle (see pics). The bottle is 3/4 full with original medicinal fluid compound which has not been opened for many, many years and is sealed 'as original' with its original cork (see pics). Also has most of its original thick gold foil label (see pic close-up provided). The bottle is from the son's business, his firm's name is on the bottle's label "Wm. S. Merrell Chemical Co. MANUFACTURING CHEMISTS" Cincinnati (Ohio), see label pics provided. This bottle was manufactured during the late 1880s. is in original condition with no repairs or restoration and has BOTH its ORIGINAL paper labels on front & back (see pics provided). Bottle is a beautiful deep dark natural amber color which is integral in the glass and not tinted or painted on (see pics). Bottle is in excellent condition with only the tiniest flea bite on the bottom underneath base of bottle, no cracks, no chips, no cloudiness, no scratches, very minimal wear, clean & unsoiled, lovely gloss on surfaces of amber glass (see pics). Beautiful is in amazing condition for its age being approx. 130 years old, as bottle was well kept in a closed cabinet and out of the weather and elements. Bottle measures approx. 7 3/8" tall x 2.75" wide. The contents of the medicinal compounds are clearly marked on the back paper labels of the Merrell medicine bottles as are on this one (see pics). Staes the dosage, states the contents and name bring "BROOM TOP ~ Cytisus Scoparius", states purpose & use of medicine as well: "used as an emetic, cathartic, diuretic, for curing Dropsy, diseases of the Lung.' Being very successful and an innovator in the field, the Company sold their medicinal cures along the Eastern Atlantic Coastline from Nantucket to Virginia. Obviously many of the so-called 'Cures' were over expressed and many were what is now called "Quack Medicine". Wonderful, Very Rare, Great Condition, Original, 1880s Antique American "Quack Medicine" amber glass Medicine Bottle with both original paper labels-gold foil on neck-tooled lip-cork original on top-deep dark amber color & in excellent clean condition signed "Broom Top Wm. S. Merrell Chemical Co. Manufacturing Chemists" Cincinnati Ohio in original untouched condition for display & collection.
