Have not cleaned them. Cast iron, not spring loaded if they ever were, they are not now. No casting chips or breaks. Measure about 13" end to end. Could certainly still be used. Should clean up just fine. Nice addition to any collection of vintage hearth items or tools or hardware made by Reading Hardware in Reading, PA. Patent date is November 14th, 1876.
