THE PEARL PRESS

Vol. 1, Boston, January, 1876, No. 1

Golding & Co.'s New Establishment, No. 40 Fort Hill Square (formerly Washington Square), Boston

This paper is from Golding & Co. the maker of letterpress printing machinery back in the 1800's into early 1900's. The company's founder was printer William Hughson Golding. Historic information can be found online about his company and the important role it played in early letterpress printing machinery. He started the company in the Fort Hill area of Boston around 1869. This paper is dated 1876 as shown.

  • It says on the front page in the box, "This paper was printed two pages at one impression on a No. 3 Pearl Press. This page was printed from type that has been in use five years. It not only shows the work that the Pearl Presses will do from old type, but also the durability of type sold by us."

This paper measures 5 5/8" by 8 1/4" and consists of 4 total pages. Paper color is off-white.

Cover page as shown starts the intro paragraph, "The manufacturer of Pearl and Diamond Printing Presses, which are literally making every business man, school teacher and school boy their own printers, is getting to be a business of large proportions co-extensive, indeed, with this whole continent, to say nothing of orders for printing presses, materials and outfits from South America, and even China and Japan. Such orders may be seen on the desks of Messrs. Golding & Co., at 40 Fort Hill Square, arriving daily. This firm has made a world-wide reputation in the manufacture of Pearl and Diamond Printing Presses..."

Inside you will find some illustrations including the new Iron Cabinet and Print Stand Pearl Press, Little Giant Rule and Lead Cutter, Screw Quoins, Bodkins, pricing. Back cover has samples of A JOB LOT OF NEW TYPE AT VERY LOW PRICES.

Condition - see photos. Paper has fold down the center, some small creases, rub and scuff, age and use, a few small soil marks here and there, a tiny rip on cover page right side but no paper missing. It is pre-owned and being sold "as is" as was found.
