This is the signature of Georgia Governor James Emerson Brown on a cotton card broadside Executive Department at Milledgeville, Georgia of February 9, 1863. The ink; as you can see, is faded. However, I was able to make out his name in the lower right with the month of Apr (April) below it. I can make out some of the other words; however, I leave it to you to decide all of the wording.   He had a long political career including Georgia Governor from the time (1857 to 1865) leading up to and during the Civil War. He was pro secessionist.

There are several samples of his signature on eBay as well as the internet. However, none on such a document of which I am aware. Please satisfy yourself as to the signature. I guarantee two things (1) The broadside document is original. (2) The writing on the broadside document is also original. It is also my strong belief that tis his signature; again, satisfy yourself. Be sure to use the magnifier feature to view signature close up.

Image 1 is of broadside itself. Image 2 is of broadside turned to view writing. Image 3 is back; blank with bleed through of ink. Broadside is 13 by 9.625 inches. There are “holes” where the ink bled trough per the images. It can be handled with normal care. I will mail this in a round hard paper mailing tube.

All of my documents are originals; no copies or reproductions. If it is an old reprint I will state it as such or show it in the images. My eBay documents are also offered locally as well as in other venues. I do my utmost to cancel an eBay listing as soon as possible if that happens. In the most unlikely event I sell a document prior to your bid or win on eBay, I will refund your total payment soonest. Only once since August 2016 have I had to inform a buyer that the item was sold locally and no longer available. If that event I immediately refunded all of their payment.

Old Iron Gaul Ink, used particularly in the 18th and into the 19th century, on some paper there can bleed through over time. That, and the acid in the paper as well as how and where a document was originally stored over many decades, can also lead to the brittleness that is sometimes encountered. Hence, where the ink is you can get deterioration and “bleed through”. Of course, all older documents may also have issues as to condition through normal wear and tear over time as well as where and how they were stored. If you want to stabilize and strengthen the pages you can do so by repairing areas with loss as well as any breaks on the folds or missing areas with Japanese rice paper and archival glue.

COMBINED SHIPPING: If this is the only document you desire, please complete checkout per listing. However; if you purchase more than one document, do not pay immediately. Request an invoice for all documents as that will reduce shipping costs. Some Buy It Now listings will not let you ask for combined shipping. Not to worry, complete the Buy It Now and I will refund any excess shipping costs when I compute combined shipping for all documents.  This ONLY applies to documents; not to other items I may offer. I will not mail my old documents with non - document items. All documents are folded only at their original folds and then placed in protector sheets followed by three or more corrugated cardboard stiffeners. The document is sandwiched between the stiffeners with the stiffeners taped to together to prevent movement. That is all packed as one piece and Do Not Bend and / or Fragile stickers affixed to outside of mailer.

SHIPPING COST: I charge nothing for materials; I use new protective sheeting on all documents, plus tape, mailers, labels, etc. On occasion if I have a good condition used mailer I will use it. I do not add packing materials cost into shipping. However, I had a buyer “ding” me for 23 cent shipping difference on feedback as being “excessive shipping”. The shipping cost was clear in the listing, the buyer paid it and then dinged me on my feedback. I routinely refund any shipping differences of 40 cents or more; whatever the reason. And in those instances where I undercharged for shipping I absorb it and do not ask the buyer to pay more. The buyer paid $85.00 for the item and for some reason is petty over 23 cents. I do not want to sound mean; however, I can’t understand that mentality. If you feel I overcharged you, including any of the minuscule eBay discounts I may receive as a seller, please let me know. I will double check and refund any and all amounts including eBay discount. If I do not owe any back I will send you an image of the actual cost and what you paid as proof. And I will not let your request affect my posting positive feedback for you.

Payment expected within three (3) days of your winning bid unless agreed to otherwise prior to any bidding. Thank you for considering my offerings.
