A map of Western New York as it was in 1809 published in 1850. In 1809 the Holland Land Company was still trying to name Buffalo NY as New Amsterdam, but the name did not stick. Very few communities are shown but they include Buffalo, Black Rock, Lewis Town (now Lewiston) as well as Forts Niagara and George. Of particular interest are a proposed canal to link Tonawanda Creek with the Genessee River, marking of salt springs and Sulphur springs, a new state road being built upon the line of the current Rte 104 which was an old Native American Trail and the Turnpike along the line of the present NY State Turnpike. In Ontario a line represents the approximate limit of settlement north of the lake no more than 20 miles inland. Engraver is R. Pease.

This map was published in E. B. O'Callaghan's "History of the New Netherlands" published by Reedy Parson in Albany NY in 1850 on thin hand laid paper. Faint folds as issued but apparently never folded.

Very light browning to edges. Otherwise no damage, tears or stains.
