Rare first edition of the first book printed in Spain with Arabic printing types and a key work of the Spanish Enlightenment. Lebanon-born Maronite Miguel Casiri (Gharcieh al-Ghaziri) (1710-1791) was one of the first scholars to turn to the great legacy of the Arab presence on the Iberian Peninsula. After completing his studies in Rome, Casiri had come to Madrid in 1748, where he worked for over forty years as a librarian at the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, which contained a large collection of Arabic manuscripts, many dating from the period of Islamic dominion in Spain. In collaboration with Manuel Martínez Pingarrón, Juan de Iriarte and Cisneros and the Hebrew José Rodríguez de Castro, Casiri was finally able to submit in 1760 the present first volume of the inventory catalog of Arabic manuscripts in the Escorial. The second volume was not published until 1770. The work lists a total of 1851 manuscripts, of which 1628 are contained in this first volume. The present volume includes the codices on grammar, rhetoric, poetry, philosophy, politics, medicine, mathematics and astronomy, while the second volume lists the Arabic manuscripts on geography and history. The reader will find extensive materials on the history of Spain under Muslim rule and a list of Spanish-Arabic poets (pp. 95-105). Occasionally slightly water-stained. A very rare book for the collector of Islamic manuscripts and/or books.
