(Images of the evangelical history recited throughout the year during the holy communion, ordered in line with the life of Christ), which accompanies the Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia quae in Sacrosancto Missae Sacrificio toto anno leguntur, cum eorundem Evangeliorum concordia. Autore Hieronymo Natali, Societatis Iesu Teologo. Editio prima (Antwerp, 1593). Shortening the title, it is known as the Biblia Natalis in reference to the name of its promoter, P. Jeroni Nadal i Morey from Mallorca, student and successor of Ignatius of Loyola, and its engravings make it one of the most superb Flemish illustrated works of the sixteenth century and of the Counter-Reformation. Michel Natalis (1610-1668) was a painter, artist, and engraver from Belgium who used the best Flemish engravers of the day including members of the Wierix family, C. de Mallory, and A. Collaert, all related to the Galle publishing house in Antwerp. Most of the plates are after drawings of the Italian artist Bernardo Passeri, and a few are after drawings by Martin de Vos. The engraving uses an iconographic programme with a high pedagogic content, a tool of Catholic propaganda reflecting an indoctrination of the masses in line with the ideas of the Council of Trent. Indeed engravings from this series became a very important compendium of the dogma and Catholic faith for teaching the catechism. Copper engraving. Leaf: 30 x 21 cm First published 1593. Similarly I was able to hone my specialist interests in early photography, the history of science and Helvetica, something that I hope is still reflected in the items I offer. The aim is to offer the rare, interesting, unusual, beautiful and strange. So at the very least we hope your visit to the site to be a rewarding and enlightening experience!
