The unit left for Annapolis, Maryland, October 31st under the command of Colonel Charles Russell of Derby and was assigned to the First Brigade of Burnside’s Division. The Regiment remained in Annapolis two months, during which time it became noted for superior drill and discipline under the command of General J.G. Foster. During the Civil War, the 10th saw service in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and back in Virginia. The Regiment remained at Appomattox until the last rebel had been parolled, leaving there the 15th of April. On the 16th it moved to Richmond where it remained until August 26th when it ordered home and was mustered out of the service at Hartford, Connecticut, December 5, 1865 This letter is written by William Savage, a member of the 10th Conn. Vols, writes his father, Selah Savage in Greenwich, Conn., from New Bern, NC. This a very newsy letter covering a variety of topics. Very neatly written and easy to read Excerpts: "I heard today that the rebels had evacuated Kingston a city about 70 miles above here on the Neuse River. :They heard that General Burnside was advancing on them, they seized the panic and evacuated. Well General Burnside has advanced as far as Bachelor's Creek (where the rebels burned a bridge in their retreat from this place)......Here is another similar story which I hope is not true. When our forces went up to Washington (another North Carolina town), soon after we arrived here, they were met by the inhabitants in a very friendly manner. the mayor of the city, a good union man, afterwards came down to see the General. Since that time Jeff Davis has sent down there and had the mayor and citizens arrested and carried away." It is my hopes that all auctions go smoothly and provide you with exactly what you expect.
