Seller: chblack (6,658) 100%, Location: Fairfax, Virginia, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 302681896108 Lot Description:This nice Sahara Neolithic miniature axe in good condition. We have all seen the many usually granite Neolithic hard stone celts listed over the years. This one is different because of the groove. Celts served similar purposes to axes except they were probably hand held versus hafted to a handle. This tool has been grooved around the heel end to provide a feature to more securely haft the axe head to a wood or bone handle. This tool is RARE in 15+ years collecting this is only one of three I have owned. I have owned and sold hundreds possible probably a couple thousand of the more common straight sided hardstone celts. It was lost in the western Sahara 2,500+ years ago. No damage, the bark area near the bit is a change in color of the underlying lithic. Length is 3inches (7.8 cm) long Background information on the Sahara Neolithic is provided with my 2-page essay on the subject, which will be included.Neolithic populations living near now dried lakes and rivers in what is now the Sahara desert. The end of the Ice Age resulted in global climate changes which stopped the rains and forced these Neolithic (New Stone Age) peoples into new modes of existence, either agriculture which was just beginning at the end of the Neolithic, or a nomadic animal husbandry mode of existence. The New Stone Age was a very dynamic era giving rise to agriculture, pottery, and permanent settlements, all of which were milestones in humankind's march toward 'civilized' life. The Sahara Neolithic lasted from 9,000 to 4,000 BP (years Before Present). I will include my 2-page essay on the Sahara Neolithic to explain something of the Neolithic era and context in which these tools were found.
