Condition denotes possible use in burial ritual.Intricately carved stone, with fine detailed carving of a snake coiled around the stem of pipe, with snake appears to be swallowing an egg. Original patina remains untouched, color has a greenish grey appearance. History: Mississippian Culture were the last mound building cultures. They covered the Midwestern & Southeastern North American region. Due to the quality of this hand carved steatitepipe. It would have been used for burial or ceremonial rituals, & associated with the elite. Mound builders had extensive trading routes between each culture. Because the Mississippian cultures areas are all connected by waterways/rivers. Tennessee, Ohio & the Mississippi Rivers. Personal History: I am 76 years old, I grew up on the Tennessee River. This pipe came from the Ramey Family Collection. My father was born in 1884 he grew up TN, KY & IL river area. I was fortunate to have received family found artifacts along with what I found as child. To enable me to present some very special museum quality artifacts. Questions welcomed!
