For sale is an original and gorgeous Impressionist oil painting by the long island New York artist Sidney Wright Curtis (1852 - 1926)

Curtis took up oil painting as a hobby to his very successful banking career. He turned his attention to painting more as he stepped back from his banking career duties. He created some lovely landscapes most of which feature areas around the Long Island New York locales.

The artist was a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City and exhibited there. You rarely see his paintings coming up for sale.

This painting features a gorgeous impressionist view of a field of probably dogwood trees in full bloom.

The trees sporadically scattered amongst a forks of green grasses and wildflowers.

Done in gorgeous colorations and nice wispy impressionist brushstrokes.

The painting is signed on the reverse. We are unsure if this is from the artists hand or from the estate. This painting came from a collection of paintings that featured a lot of Peconic bay artists on Long Island. That is all we know about is history.

Some damage noted as pictured in the bottom right corner with a small area of paint loss and some lifting. Easily mitigated with a good conservator.

Circa 1910 in age.

The painting would benefit from a light cleaning. The frame possibly original, and with only age-appropriate wear.

Sidney Wright Curtis (October 4, 1852 - July 10, 1926)

Stock broker and painter. Born in Brooklyn Heights, Long Island, New York to Rebecca Dodge Curtis (1822 - January 10, 1892) and her husband Sidney Curtis (1813 - d. b. 1860). Sidney W. Curtis's grandfather was Daniel K. Dodge (d. December 26, 1863), the prominent and wealthy Brooklyn cotton merchant. His father's early death meant that Curtis would spend much time surrounded by his Dodge relatives.

In fact, Sidney W. Curtis lived with his extended family for many years, and by 1880 they were ensconced at 157 Congress Street in Brooklyn. There he lived with his mother, her sister, his sister, many cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as a large number of servants. He married Grace Kerswell (August 1871 - April 25, 1907) in June of 1885 and they would reside for a time at 161 Congress Street, then 47 Pierrepont Street, and after he was widowed he resided at 112 Hicks Street in Brooklyn Heights, NY.

He began his business career as a bank clerk and worked his way up to become a partner with A. G. Bradstreet (d. 1893) in the firm of Bradstreet & Curtis, located at 35 Pine Street, New York, NY. They were bankers and members of the Consolidated Stock Exchange (where Curtis served on the board) who specialized in "State, City, County, Town, and Railroad" bonds. Following his partners death the old firm was dissolved and was reconstituted as Curtis & Romaine, located at 30 Broad Street, which was in existence until its own dissolution in 1912. Curtis retained his broker's license until his retirement from "active business" in 1921.

Curtis appears to have also been involved in the Nicaraguan Canal Company, which was pushing for the development of a canal through Nicaragua, as opposed to the one that was eventually completed through Panama. In May of 1892 the New York Evening Telegram reported that " . . . Sidney W. Curtis, of New York, financial manager of the canal company, will remain in San Francisco for some time looking after the interests of the company . . ." The cheap acquisition of the Panama project from the French eventually sealed the doom for the Nicaraguan project.

When exactly Sidney Curtis took up painting is unclear, though it seems to have occurred late in his business career. He joined the Salmagundi Club, one of the city's leading artist organizations, in 1904 and exhibited there regularly until his death. With business becoming less important, painting landscapes and creating etchings became his full time hobbies. Curtis was not only an artist, but a collector of American art as well, which he generously loaned to many regional art institutions. His collection included works by many well known artists of the day, including Carlton Wiggins, Alexander H. Wyant, and Winslow Homer (who presented three sketches to Curtis's wife upon her request).

As an artist, he depicted locations on Long Island, both in Brooklyn and elsewhere, including scenes on the east end, where he painted the work entitled Peconic Marshes, which he exhibited at the Salmagundi Club in 1912. During August of 1909 he is listed among the Brooklyn visitors staying at the famous Prospect House Hotel, located on Shelter Island, NY. He also traveled overseas several times, including in 1907, 1914, in 1923 on a European "pleasure trip" taken with his son, Sidney B. Curtis (May 7, 1886 - May 25, 1950), and for one final trip, this time to Hawaii in the spring of 1926.

There are doubtless more exhibitions that could be added to the following list of known exhibitions in which he participated during his lifetime. This is especially true of those relating to Brooklyn art organizations in which Curtis was almost certainly a participant: Salmagundi Club, New York, NY, 1907-1914, 1916, 1918-1926; National Academy of Design, New York, NY, 1910, 1912, 1919.

Sidney W. Curtis died on Saturday, the 10th of July 1926 in his 74th year.
