He was a WPA artist who is included in the WPA collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. During WWII he contributed illustrations to the U.S. Navy Combat Batallion Seabee magazine "Engineer" distributed in the Pacific Theater and created a series of original works on paper portraits of African Americans. Wheeler traveled throughout Southeastern Penna. and South Jersey in the area of the Main Line, Rittenhouse Square, Bucks County, Lambertville, the Delaware River and May's Landing, exhibiting at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). His landscapes often include colonial architecture, his seascapes frequently include boat docks and portrayals of the regional fishing industry while his interiors periodically portray antiques and American decorative arts or cats. Tropical subjects are typically either of Okinawa, Japan or the Phillipines. Wheeler is best known for his watercolors although he worked in various media and he was an early adopter of serigraphs for his print media. The artist is included in the P.A.F.A. reference index edited by Falk. He also is included in Davenport's, the AskArt online database and museum collections in the Northeastern U.S. His oeuvre can generally be divided into three periods, a Modernist leaning Social Realist period spanning his Depression and WWII output, the figurative regional Modernism that underpinned much of his post-War mid-1940s through mid-1950s activity when he was most prolific as well as his late 1950s and 1960s Mid-Century Modern abstraction that accounts for some the most dynamic and avant garde compositions he produced since his first stylistic apogee while working on the WPA. His works have appeared at auction in Manhattan, NY at Swann Galleries, in Pennsylvania at Pook & Pook and recently in Las Vegas, Nevada.
