Vintage E.S. LOWE Staunton Pattern Plastic CHESSMEN Set

WHAT IS IT? I am selling a VINTAGE, STAUNTON PATTERN, TOURNAMENT plastic chess piece set made by the E. S. LOWE COMPANY. I got them at an Estate Sale. Based of the other games they had, I would guess that these are from the late 1960’s to early 1970’s (but that’s a GUESS). They are molded plastic with MARBLED COLORS -- WHITE with RED marbling and PURPLE with WHITE marbling. The box has the number 828 and refers to the color as RED and IVORY. (Maybe the colors changed over the years, maybe the set was mis-boxed, maybe they just weren’t very descriptive with their colors.)

HOW BIG IS IT? The kings are 3-¼ inches tall. The pawns are 1-½ inches tall.

MAKER’S MARKS, HALLMARKS? The box top is marked “TOURNAMENT, TRADE MARK, UNBREAKABLE PLASTIC CHESSMEN, Staunton Pattern, ENDORSED BY THE UNITED STATES CHESS FEDERATION, E. S. LOWE CO. Inc., NEW YORK, N. Y.” The side of the box top is marked with the “Lowe” company mark and “TOURNAMENT PLASTIC CHESSMEN, No. 828, Red and Ivory.”

WHAT CONDITION IS IT IN? (PLEASE SEE PHOTOS) The “collars” on the pieces have small chips and wear, more-so on the pawns. Four of the pieces have had their felt pads taped on and it looks like a few more pieces have had their felt pads replaced. The box bottom is in very good shape, but I think the box lid was stepped on -- 2 corners are taped and there are other partial tears and creases.
