Rare and historical, "1880s Advertising Card for Garland Stoves and Ranges AND St. James Heaters. The first card is an advertising card telling all of the important information and features of the "Challenge-Garland" Range by Garland. These ranges were manufactured in Detroit, Michigan, and they claimed to be the largest Manufacturers of Stoves in the World. This all became possible when the Erie Canal and was built and the Great Lakes were linked, and thus it became possible to bring Iron Ore from Upper Michigan to Detroit. The stoves were actually made of a aluminum-iron alloy. The model on the card is called a six-hole soft coal range … "The most practical and best ever made." The artwork is outstanding; it has a textured finish. The Michigan Stove company had a stall at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, but it is unknown if this card was given out there. However it would make prefect sense for them to want to use high-class advertising there. The card is 5-3/8" X 4" (14 cm. x 10 cm.), a standard size for cards produced in Germany. The second item is advertising for a "parlor stove." The previous owner clearly cut the picture out of the company's advertising brochure, to save the pretty picture for a scrapbook. Now-a-days we think of a stove as something we cook on. But before the days when houses had a furnace in the basement, a parlor stove would be placed in various rooms in a house for heating. People of higher class were attracted to stoves with beautiful designs and rich decorations. But these stove were also constructed to make sure warm air circulated efficiently. The ad talks about a device that prevents the ashes from lodging in the doors and falling on the floor. But in addition people of refined tastes (ie. the well-to-do) wanted more than warmth and high quality. Their demand for ornate and artistic stoves is the reason why we see these ads today. And like any seller of upscale goods the prices are not mentioned. These ads are in very good condition with no soiling or surface wear. Please see all of the photos above to confirm the condition and contents of this brochure.
