Seller: clioantiquities (144) 100%, Location: Wilmington, North Carolina, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 132003099865 Roman Glass Janus Head Bottle CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Roman Empire (Eastern Mediterranean) DATE: 3rd-4th Century AD DIMENSIONS: 5.5 cm (2.15 in.) tall DESCRIPTION: Intact. A rare Roman mould-made double head shaped bottle of transparent manganese colored, slightly pinkish-purple glass. The vessel has a slightly everted rim that is rolled inward, a tubular neck with a small bulge above the edge of the mould, and a body in the shape of a double head. The base is roughly oval and flat though somewhat irregular, causing the vessel to stand at a slight tilt. The two heads have similar chubby, child0like features, possibly representing Eros or Dionysus, with ample hair that appears curly and is pulled back from the face. The seam for the two-part mould is particularly noticeable down the middle of the hair on one side. There is encrustation in the recessed areas of the exterior, particularly the hair, with small patches of rainbow iridescence, and deposits on the interior. A small (0.5 cm) stable stress fracture runs horizontally along the lower part of the tubular neck. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Welsh private collection formed between the 1970s and 2008. PUBLISHED: Bonhams, ANTIQUITIES, London, Sale #16777, part of Lot 302, described on page 174. COMPARISONS: E. Marianne Stern, Roman, Byzantine, and Early Medieval Glass, 10 BCE-700 CE, Ernesto Wolf Collection, Ostfildern-Ruit, 2001, Cat. Numbers 73, 74 & 75 for related examples, with No. 75 being the closest in style and glass color. Material: Glass
