A detailed Roman bronze appliqué of a lion mask. The lion has been depicted with great attention to detail in the form of a pronounced snout, slightly parted mouth and furrowed brows. His exquisite mane is rendered with curling tendrils to indicate the voluptuous fur. The reverse remains undecorated and hollowed out. An exceptional piece with beautiful detailing.
This splendid applique was used to decorate the armour of high ranking soldiers or gladiators and was awarded as a celebration of the medal holder's valour and courage.
