This is a great historical display piece or usable item! Great for decor, movie prop, or museum artifact. It measures about 19.25" handle to handle. The tray itself is about 17"× 11". There doesn't appear to be any loose stiching or discoloration. Great eye to detail in this woven piece. Back is lined with a felt like material. The frame of the tray is wooden, I believe, and the handles are of a brass or bronze metal. This may need some cleaning. Overall, great hiatorical tapestry tray. I'm unsure the origin of this piece, but here is a little tapestry background: History of tapestries indicates clearly that a tapestry wall-hanging in your home brings not just interior beauty but also a sense of history. European weavers have produced these textiles for centuries, including medieval, renaissance, and arts and crafts periods. This traces a history of tapestries from the ancient Egyptians to today – including medieval tapestry weaving, Francois Boucher, Les Gobelins workshops, and William Morris. Tapestry weaving has been known for hundreds of years in diverse cultures. Both ancient Egyptians and the Incas buried their dead in tapestry woven clothing. Important civic buildings of the Greek Empire, including the Parthenon, had walls covered by them. However, it was the French medieval weavers who brought the craft to fruition.
