Seller: wear-the-past (1,930) 99.7%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371794427575 This is an ancient Sardonyx Cameo of a Renaissance king, the layout of design, closely follows that of the Ptolemaic Cameos of Ptolemy II and Arisone II, in guise of Zeus of Hera contracted in "Holy Marriage". The Roman cameo portraying Mars and Venus. During the Renaissance, the art of gem cutting cameos came back in fashion, as such many copies were made of early Roman and Greek pieces. It is possible that this ancient gem is a later Renaissance copy of an ealier gem, the helmet doesn't quite look Classical Roman to me, possibly a re-imagining by a Renaissance artist. As such the two busts represent king Henry II (of France) and his wife Catherine de Medici . A nice early piece worthy of further research.OBJECT: CameoCULTURE: RenaissanceDATE: c. 16th century A.D. c. 1550 - 1600 ADMATERIAL: Sardonyx hardstoneSIZE: 31.58mm x 23.39mm x 8.34mmWEIGHT: 8.4 gramsThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
