Pre-Columbian Maya Terracotta Figural Censer Cover Coa

$2,495.00 or Best Offer 21d, $50.00 Shipping, 30-Day Returns

Seller: rodrogrs (757) 100%, Location: New York, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 122239656092 This spectacular representation of a bearded Maya dignitary — most likely an eighth-century monarch — was ingeniously constructed as a censer cover designed to channel smoke through the figure’s open mouth. The wafting smoke was intended to serve as an offering to the inhabitants of the spirit world. The censer was modeled in two sections; an urn in which incense was burned and this anthropomorphic chimney-cover depicting an elaborately ornamented seated lord who sits regally with flexed legs and hands on knees. 7 5/8” (19.5cm) x 5.5” (14cm) x 5” (12.7cm.) Embellished with orange, white and black colors; most of the basal lid lost in antiquity and the figure was insignificantly restored to very good overall condition.
