Seller: rodrogrs (759) 100%, Location: New York, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 122239428705 For your consideration is this large, rare and unusual pre-Columbian artifact; an elegantly designed Aztec tetzilláctl copper bell decorated with six writhing snakes. This large ideophone was cast in ovoid form and the resonating chamber is surmounted by a circular suspension loop. 1 7/8” (50 mm) high x 7/8” (23mm) in diameter and is richly patinated overall with verdigris. Metalworking first diffused to Western Mexico from South America about 700 A.D., an area containing vast deposits of copper ore, and gradually spread throughout the Valley of Mexico and beyond. Copper bells were cast using the “lost-wax” process and used as ceremonial paraphernalia, rattles, worn on clothing as jingling attachments or on body adornments including belts, necklaces, arm-bracelets and anklets.
