The tapered spout serves as the figure’s headdress; the rim is painted with one of four different repeat dot-and-linear motifs and further embellished by two fully modeled animal heads. This attractive bi-chrome vessel has been elaborately painted with a dark brown slip over a cream field; the face is painted brown, there are two globular appliqué eyes and the ears are pierced and ornamented. The upper chest area is decorated with a dot-design from which two diminutive arms extend to hold the flute. The lower portion and back are painted with a complex geometric-and-dot design and there is another modeled animal head above the massive lug on each side of the jar. There is a fourth distinctive zigzag-and-enclosed dot design painted on the back of the head; the basal portion of the jar is undecorated. 13.5” (34.2 cm) x 10.5” (26.6 cm). Insignificantly abraded surfaces, but without repairs or restoration, this delightful figure is in excellent overall condition.
