In September 1980, after 22 months of negotiations, the U.S. and China signed major agreements covering trade, consular service, shipping, and commercial aviation. In anticipation of the agreement, the Civil Aeronautics Board accepted applications from seven domestic carriers to operate a route between New York and Beijing with possible stopovers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Tokyo and Shanghai. The CAB’s selection of Pan Am was approved by the President on November 3, 1980.

Amid considerable fanfare, a Pan Am Boeing 747SP renamed “China Clipper” (after Pan Am’s legendary transpacific aircraft which flew from San Francisco to the Far East in 1935) departed New York on January 28, 1981 on the inaugural commercial flight to Beijing. Flight #15 operated by way of Tokyo, a 9,014 mile trip that was scheduled to be made in under 19 hours.

This cover was carried on the inaugural Pan American Airlines flight from the John F Kennedy Airport Mail Facility in New York to Beijing, China  (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as PA-F6f.
