Wonderfully unique conversation piece (indoor OR out!) Never heard of an "octopus pot"? Don't feel bad. We've been collecting antiques and primitives for over 25 YEARS and this is the first time we've EVER come across one. These days, they make them out of durable plastic, but octopus pots USED to be made from terracotta. THAT said, some fishermen in Japan still use the old terracotta ones even today. They drop the pot down in the water with a rope tied around the neck. The holes in the base (and the side) of the pot allows it to sink to the bottom AND allows water to escape when it is eventually pulled back OUT. An octopus will come along and crawl INTO the pot to set up house. The fisherman eventually returns and uses a long pole with a crook on the end to pull the pot up and into his net. If there's an octopus inside he turns the pot over and taps on it until the octopus gets irritated and drops out (and into the holding tank on the boat). These pots spend so much time on the sea floor that they eventually become semi-covered in barnacles (both inside and out!). The barnacles make each pot totally unique. No two are ever exactly alike. I had never seen anything like it and just fell in love when I saw these. THIS one has LOTS of barnacles inside and out. Just a precious piece that could be functional in many ways. The holes (1 in the bottom and 1 on the side) are SUPPOSED to be there (to allow them to sink AND be pulled back up). And those holes make it perfect to be used as a planter. OR it would be beautiful simply as a stand alone piece (indoor OR out). Either way......it's certainly a WONDERFUL conversation piece! I've provided MANY high-resolution pictures below for your inspection. The pot you SEE is the EXACT pot you will RECEIVE. Measures 11" Tall, 8" wide. Nice weight to this piece at SIX and Half POUNDS! The pictures below are just examples of some of these octopus pots actually in USE! inkFrog Analytics Condition: Just a precious piece that could be functional in many ways.
