Seller: nightclass (603) 100%, Location: North Adams, Massachusetts, Ships to: US, Item: 162272917454 Male Figurine from Petsofa and the Middle Minoan period Reproduction in Bronze Figure has a Height of 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) and with the marble stand measures 9.5 inches tall. (24.1 cm) There is a wax seal that reads "Museum Copy" on one side and "Hand Made in Greece" on the reverse side. The figure appears to stand to attention, either praying or saluting in the unusual style of the dusty, distant past, and to be nude except for a belt, codpiece, and a dagger. This reproduction has a lovely bronze patina. The British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans began excavations at Knossos, on the island of Crete, that uncovered a sophisticated prehistoric culture, which he dubbed Minoan after the legendary King Minos. Evans hired a Swiss artist, Emile Gilliéron (1850–1924) and later his son, Emile (1885–1939), as chief fresco restorers at Knossos, where they worked for more than thirty years. The Gilliérons also established a thriving business catering to the popular demand for reproductions of antiquities from the newly identified Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. While the provenance of this carefully crafted reproduction is not known, and was purchased by me at a gallery in Athens, the ones made by the Gilliérons were disseminated around the world and provided a vivid impression of the new finds that inspired a generation of writers, intellectuals and artists.
