92" Strand of 19 multi style sleigh bells consisting of the following, with every bell photographed below.
These bells are from the thumb area of Michgian, a rural area with plenty of horses. Unfortunately, with estate sales we don't always get the full history and rely on information in our publications and the internet. We will do are best to put together the pieces, but please view all the photo's and come to your own conclusion.
Primary Dimensions:
Bells are different styles. The strap is 92" in length, legthened on the tail end with rivet fasteners. The smallest are 1 1/8" including the middle rim, under 1 inch when you measure the bell dimension only.
The larger are 1 1/4 with no rim.
Styles of Bells are as follows:
Antique Petal Bells with Ridge, 4 holes on underside, marked 1.
Mounting system appears to have been modified at some time by the addition of a machine screw attached to the bell, and inserting through the leather strap. Not sure if this was the intention or just a way to make it convenient to install. It looks like a modification to me, as it was added to all the bells in the group which are a variety of different types.
Double Throat Bells (see commens above that apply to mounting)
Single slit with enlarged rounded end points more common with older bells.
Age: Unknown, Makers Mark, none founded. Only use of the Number 1 on the middle bell above. Note pattern is only on this bell.
Condition of Strap: black leather, some cracking, still solid. Extended with 2 rivets firmly in place. Approx 1 inch thick. Most likely not original to these bells, due to the attachment method modified. See last photo for closeups of this modification.
Condition of bells, not polished. We lightly dusted, but that is it, no chemicals used. A few bells had a mild but slight indentation on a side, that was all that was noted. Please ask questions if you need more information.
