THOMAS E. MALONEY
THOMAS E. "TOM" MALONEY - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED
He writes, "You almost waited too long to seek aces signatures, as we are a vanishing breed."
Autograph Letter signed: "Tom Maloney",
1 page, 4¼x7. No place, 2005 April 12.
On American Legion stationery to "Dear Adam", in full: "Thank you for your kind letter. You almost waited too long to seek aces signatures, as we are a vanishing breed. I remember very well the Mogadishu, Somalia fiasco and regretted very much our President sending you guys in harms way without overpowering support which we had but did not use. There is a lesson there - still to be learned - but each new leader seems to have to learn it for himself. I've enclosed your signature cards and a couple of pictures."
[Items not included.] Thomas E. Maloney (d. 2008) earned ace status by downing 8 German planes in the Mediterranean Theater
of World War II. On August 19, 1944, he successfully attacked ground targets in southern France, only to be high - not by enemy fire - but by debris shooting skyward from his strike. Surviving a harrowing sea crash and ordeal on the French coast, where he stepped on a land mine, Maloney survived, but walked with a cane for the rest of his life. Maloney shot down more enemy aircraft than any other pilot of the 27th Fighter Squadron, and that unit still paints the logo for his P-38 "Maloney's Pony" fighter on the fuselages of their F-22 Raptors
(though with grey paint appropriate to these "stealth" fighters). Normal mailing fold. Fine condition.
