$450.00 0 Bids Unsold, eBay Money Back Guarantee

Seller: epone (638) 100%, Location: Sacramento, California, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 302150879171 Beautiful example of Silla Dynasty (57 BC – 935 AD) pottery. The shape shows evidence of Chinese influence from its strong association with the Tang Dynasty. The overall shape recalls Chinese bronze vessels in its exaggerated raised foot and the small belly that flares out into a wide mouth. The pierced decoration in the foot also seems to have ancestors in Chinese bronze work. The traces of glaze remaining on the vessel show the characteristic olive green color of this period. The delicately rippled comber decoration in the neck contrast with the heavier quality of the shape. There are some raised areas on one side of the piece that look rather like bosses which may be part of a decorative schematic or which may be flaws in the execution of the design. The recessed lip shows that this originally would have been a lidded jar, which has unfortunately been separated from the piece. The jar is 10 6/16” tall and about 5” in diameter in the body (5 3/8” at the rim and 6” at the foot). The vessel may be a burial piece as these are commonly found in tombs. It is still covered with dirt residue and retains only traces of the original glaze which appears to have been chemically degraded during its’ interment. I can find no cracks in the piece (though there may be some hairlines that are covered by the dirt). The only breaks I see are a thin sliver out of the rim and some fairly small chips in the rim and in the edge of the foot. One side of the foot was pushed in slightly when the clay was still soft, giving it an irregular elliptical shape.
