INVENTORY SALE - REDUCED FROM $7,499.99 - GREAT VALUE. Khmer Sandstone Relief Fragment 'Indra Riding his Three-headed Elephant', Angkor Period. 13th C.Temple Wall or Lintel Fragment. Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. Description: An exquisite and masterfully conceived early 13th century example of a Khmer Bas Relief carved Sandstone Wall Fragment from Hindu literature and mythology, from a temple precinct in the Siem Reap district of northern Cambodia. The fragment is beautifully rendered in a Trefoil style arched sanctuary depicting Lord Indra, the Sun and Sky God, riding atop his vehicle, the mythical three-headed elephant 'Airavana' who is understood as the perfect symbol of royality. The deity is flanked by two female attendants sitting aside his elephant, dressed in typical khmer attire unclothed above the waist adorned in mere jeweled ornamentation, wearing long stylized sampots and conical headdress, bound by inter-connected Angkorian style 'diadem' crowns. Typical of the Angkorian period architecture this sandstone relief is consistent with the sanctuary style motif, used in wall niches, blind doors, or false windows to decorate the exterior and interior of a Khmer constructed Temple. The fragmented is a good solid piece, in excellent condition, unaltered, with a naturally aged patina of mottled hues and color variations, showing normal wear, with minor degradation of the surface from age and the environment in which it was maintained.
