THIS AUCTION IS FOR A TRUE FIRST

(see photo below), the last line on page 281 has the reference to “Men.”

included, binding in red cloth with gilt-stamped spine. Original first edition
dust-jacket printed in black, red and gold without quotes on rear flap, 21s.
net price inside back. The rear flap appears to be second state since it includes
quotes from reviews for The Fellowship of
the Ring and The Two Towers (see
photos).
CONDITION
Please see photos for more details. The
dust jacket is covered with a clear plastic cover and has a light red/orange
backing that has kept it protected. I
suspect that if the protective cover were to be removed, the dust jacket
underneath is likely to be in decent condition.
There is a tag or book ticket on the front of the book from
"Douglas & Foulis, Booksellers & Librarians, 9 Castle Street, Edinburgh"
which appears to have been a circulating library in Scotland from WWI through at least
the 1950’s. The name “Lawrence Timony.”
is written in on top of the first blank page. On the second blank page from the
beginning you can see the binding is cracked/ loose at the front where it joins
with the spine. The cloth boards and
spine seem solid. The endpapers have
some marks/stains; most from the tape used to secured the dust jacket. The map
at the rear is present and in good condition.
There is a small tear in the upper left hand corner of the portion of
the map that is attached to the end page. This tear is nowhere close to the map
image. This book saw some use and there
are marks, wrinkles and stains on various pages; although overall the majority
of the pages look clean. We have
included photos of some noticeable ones, but there may be others. We would be happy to take more photographs of
specific details or pages upon request.

 Good Luck and happy bidding!
