History/Marks: In 1870, Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin established Laughlin Pottery in East Liverpool, Ohio. The firm made whiteware, an ironstone utilitarian ceramic form. In 1896, Laughlin and Wells incorporated the firm as the Homer Laughlin China Company. William Wells with a group of Pittsburg investors purchased the firm. The company expanded, building two plants in Laughlin Station, Ohio, and another in 1904-1905 in Newell, West Virginia.
The company’s headquarters moved to Newell in 1907. Homer Laughlin introduced tunnel kilns in 1924. After a second plant was built in Newell in 1926, operations were consolidated in Newell and the East Liverpool, Ohio, plants closed. W. E. Wells retired in January 1930. Joseph M. Wells, Sr., his son, replaced him as general manager. In 1927, Joseph hired Frederick Hurten Rhead as design director. Rhead designed the Virginia Rose as well as some of the Eggshell shapes.
Homer Laughlin introduced Fiesta, designed by Rhead, in 1936, phasing out the line in 1973. Fiesta was reintroduced in 1986. New colors were used, and pieces were dishwasher safe and microwavable. Harlequin arrived on the scene in 1938. Harlequin was discontinued in 1964. The pattern was revived for one year in 1979 to mark the 100th anniversary of Woolworth’s. Marcus Aaron retired as president in 1948. Marcus Lester Aaron replaced him. Marcus Lester served as president for the next 48 years. In 1949, Homer Laughlin launched its Golden Wheat line.
Homer Laughlin also made hotel and restaurant china. The company has a contract with the U.S. military to supply china for use by troops at U.S. base camps. At its peak in 1948, Homer Laughlin produced over 10 million dishes. It is estimated that the company produced between 25,000 and 35,000 patterns. Facing strong competition from abroad, Homer Laughlin shifted its production to hotel and restaurant china in the early 1950s. In 2010, Homer Laughlin purchased Hall China. Homer Laughlin has a visitor center, museum, and factory outlet at its Newell plant. The Homer Laughlin mark includes H 47 N 8 meaning August 1947 at the Newell, West Virginia plant as cited by the website Restaurant Ware Collectors Network.
