DESCRIPTION: Intact. A group of two Roman brooches, including the following - * A hinged brooch of the later third Century, a very early version of what would develop into the crossbow type. These early crossbow types are sometimes referred to as "light" crossbow brooches. This example is intact and features a short cross piece or head, a prominent bow and a long sheethed foot. Three small pointed knobs project from the bow just above where it meets the foot. Dark green patina with earthen highlights. * A hinged Colchester derivative brooch of the 2nd Century, featuring a central ridge on the bow from which the surfaces angle away in three directions, a pointed knob rising from the foot, a triangular catch plate, and shallow linear decoration near the rear of the bow. Medium green patina with pale highlights. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a UK private collection through 2013.
