SAVE OUR SELLER NAME! ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE SALT GLAZED  STONEWARE OVOID JUG MADE BY GOODWIN & WEBSTER HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT 1820 - 1840 Antique primitive salt glaz ed stoneware jug made by Horace Goodwin and Mac Webster, 1820 - 1840. The legendary partners Goodwin & Webster were pioneer potters of Hartford and made stoneware for almost 30 years (1810 - 1840). This one, judging from the form and clues we see on the making, was made in the 1820- 1840 period of the partnership. The jug has a tawny complexion from the kiln. By the end of their legendary partnership, Goodwin and Webster had acquired  two active stoneware potteries in Hartford. The ovoid form is an early form difference which lasted until the 1850's. This fat bellied form was a functional part of the jug, not just for show! When filled with contents and tipped on its side to pour out some contents, sediment would settle in the belly and not flow out the top. With no filtration available these primitive pioneers needed ways to make things work and this was one of those things! Ovoid forms in jugs date back to the beginning of time and it was only the advent of filtration systems which changed all of this in the 1850's. The jug is stamped by the potter's, then washed in a bit of cobalt glaze. The handle is thick and sturdy and daubed at the terminals with blue cobalt glaze as well. The maker's stamp reads; GOODWIN         &  WEBSTER The jug is 11" tall and 8" wide at the belly and 4 1/2" wide at the base.  Goodwin & Webster, pioneer potters and cornerstones of American stoneware. Delivered to your home safely in a few days. ENJOY * ENJOY * ENJOY!!!! Note about restoration and repair: If we see it... we say it! Note about shipping costs: The shippers are brutal!
