Convex with white enamel in relief. French enamel work at its finest. Made in or immediately after 1933. Victor Schleiter is a name revered to this day in Verdun. There is a large memorial in his honour. He was a member of the French parliament. He was senior deputy mayor (a non-elected salaried position) of the city from 1919 to 1925. He was mayor (elected position) from 1925 to 1933 (when he was killed in the rail disaster at Lagny). The residents immediately renamed the city centre Rue de la Rivière (river) in his honour. The road was also rededicated in honour of the rebirth of the city following its destruction during the Great War (the French and Germans each lost around 500,000 men during the Battle of Verdun). This sign is an important piece of art, political and social history.
