A BEAUTIFUL SILVER TETROBOL OF HISTIAIA EUBOIA FROM 300 - 100 BC .

Histiaia, like most Nymphs, was a local nature deity, that while not immortal, lived long beyond a human lifespan, and frequented the outskirts of Histiaia to be glimpsed dancing, bathing or riding the wind by lonely human travelers who would spread the tale of the sighting far and wide.

The city of Histiaia had control of the large and fertile coastal plain on which the city lay.

NYMPH HISTIAIA

Histiaia was the daughter of Hyrieos. The city of Histiaia in northern Euboia is said to have been named after her. Hyrieos was a son of Poseidon and Alkyone and king of Hyria in Boiotia. He was married to the nymph Klonia.

Nymphs in ancient Greece were not goddesses, but rather personifications of nature – a human form, in this case a lovely young maiden, who represented the natural elements of fresh water trees, mountains or the sea.

HISTIAIA EUBOIA

Histiaia is mentioned in Homer's Iliad and described as "rich in wine". Thus the vine leaves on the head of Histaia are easily explained.

Histiaia was the most important Classical town in the region. Its importance was based not only on its strategic position overlooking the narrows leading to the North Euboian Gulf but on its control of the large and fertile coastal plain on which the city lay.

After the Battle of Artemisium (480 BC), when the Grecian fleet sailed southwards, Histiaia was occupied by the Persians. Upon the expulsion of the Persians from Greece, Histiaia, with the other Euboean towns, became subject to Attica.

In the revolt of Euboea from Athens in 446 BC, we may conclude that Histiaia took a prominent part, since Pericles, upon the reduction of the island, expelled the inhabitants from the city, and peopled it with 2000 Athenian colonists. The expelled Histiaians were said by Theopompus to have withdrawn to Macedonia, or by Strabo to Thessaly thence they transferred the name Histiaiotis

HISTIAIA / HYRIEOS

Histiaia was the daughter of Hyrieos. There is a story of the treasure-house of Hyrieos told by Pausanias: Agamedes and Trophonios, the sons of Erginos, king of Orchomenos, were architects and were considered specialists in the construction of temples and palaces.

When King Hyrieos commissioned them to build a treasure house, they added a stone to the walls which they could remove without anyone noticing. Through this opening they kept crawling and stealing Hyrieos' treasures. The king saw his treasure getting smaller and smaller, even though the door locks were not broken. So he set traps to catch the thief. Agamedes got caught in these traps and, to prevent discovery, Trophonios cut off his brother's head. But he himself was swallowed up by the earth at the same moment.
