Seller: maychp (567) 100%, Location: Lansing, Illinois, Ships to: US, Item: 232133232340 Remember when you could get really NICE things? No? You probably weren't around in 1935 then.---Neither was Walmart. Or the Chevy Chevette. Neither was I. But this gorgeous Edwards Longbell was around in 1935, or thereabouts. Nice, FANCY doorbells like this one were only produced for 15-20 years, starting in the early-to-mid 30's. After that, they began a long downhill slide in quality and style, ultimately becoming the mundane, horrible, white plastic buzz-boxes you see nowadays at builder supply centers and hardware stores and--sadly-- tacked up in some inconspicuous place in the home. The story of why this tragic demise came about is a fascinating one. In short, one company had most the patent rights sewn up, and all their competition went broke trying to circumvent the patents, fight lawsuits, and repair their own goods which failed due to their "mousetrap" designs. The main problem was with 3 note bells and multi-note bells, not with 2 note bells such as the one I have listed here for sale. In the 3-or-more-note bells, a special sequencing device is needed to ring the bells in the correct order. The patent for this device was written in such general terms that no matter how you designed one for your company it would infringe on the original patent. Design one using springs and plutonium and jello pudding evaporation?--Sorry!! Patent infringement!! Frog chorus resonance and gravity separator?--Sorry!! Lawsuit time!! They all decided to make doorbells cheaper to stay in the market. Few of them survived very long, and even the patent-owning producer decided to join the rush toward cheap, classless design. Edwards Signaling left the doorbell business and went into other ventures like electric-eye door openers (supermarket type) and alarm bells (firehouse, factory, and school-hall type). With the advent of commonly available plastics, and with the growing scarcity of brass during World War II, these conditions spelled the end of the fancy door bell. After the war, plastic was THE Thing! of the future, as most people tried to not look back. Few nice Fancy Bells like this one survived--there are no factory replacement parts available, and so most have been scrapped or gather dust in attics across America. This Edwards Directoire 570 model doorbell works perfectly. It is a simple, robustly-designed system which should last forever. The electric has been tested and cleaned, and the embossed brass cover has been polished and repainted very close in style to its original pattern. At one time, I believe, this bell had a volume control feature, which is not present now. The bell tubes have never been polished and have a few dark spots; but generally are great looking and sound wonderful. They could be brought back to a bright finish by super-fine sanding followed by polishing and re-coat with clear lacquer for brass. But as you can see in the photos, they are just fine as they are. I have replaced the old bell hanger cords with new, tough, nylon cords. I have added a remotely-operated night light, and the doorbell itself can also be switched on/off with the included remote fob. Also, since all A.C.-powered solenoids can be a bit "buzzy," I have converted the A.C power to D.C. power by placing a bridge rectifier between the transformer and solenoid, resulting in a more-quiet-operating circuit: no buzz, all you hear are the lovely bells. Of course, you can easily hook it up without the night light and remote power and this D.C. "quieting" feature without doing any surgery on the existing board. Dimensions are approximately 48" overall length, 8 1/2" overall width. The Edwards 570 Directoire Longbell you see here comes with the solenoid/striker mechanism, bell tubes, FANCY brass cover, mounting hardware, night light, transformer, remote-control power and light modules and the remote fob. It also comes with a very good set of wiring instructions and diagram. As a bonus, I'll send along a nice, vintage new doorbell button. Also, I will send you a little more detailed history of the fancy long bell and its demise. This is an A.C. powered WIRED doorbell. That is to say, you need to have/run doorbell wire from the doorbell button to the included 110 volt A.C. transformer and doorbell/night light. Even if you have existing wiring, I suggest you run new. If you think you're not up to running the wire yourself, you can hire an electrician to do it. The doorbell mounts to a wall with three screws and wall anchors, simple as hanging a picture! Because this is an electrical item, I make no warrants as to its future function, condition, operation, suitability for installation, longevity, nor any other quality. It is being sold in "as-is" condition, and is non-returnable. Please contact me with any questions prior to buying. That being formally stated, I warrant that this doorbell is operating perfectly now. It looks and sounds beautiful and has operated flawlessly hundreds of times in the years it has been in my home. I will test it again just prior to sealing the package for shipping. If found to be inoperable at that time, I will offer to refund your purchase prior to shipping it. But don't worry...in my opinion, this doorbell has many years of life remaining, and it will grace your hallway for all that time. I will ship the bell tubes in one package, and everything else in a second package. Both packages will be shipped insured with tracking and with signature required. Now is the time to get into the early 20th century--before plastic, when beauty led utility, and folks came calling summer Sundays for lemonade and company on the porch. Thanks for looking!!
