NGC F Romano-Gallic Double Denarius of Postumus AD260-269 SOUTH PETHERTON HOARD Marcus Cassianius Latinius Postumus (fl. 259 – 269) was a Roman commander from Batavia who became emperor of the Gallic Empire, a splinter state in the Roman Empire. After the Roman army in Gaul turned against Gallienus around 260, Postumus assumed imperial powers in Gaul, Germania, Britannia, and Hispania. He ruled for almost a decade before being killed by his own troops. Postumus portrayed himself as the restorer of Gaul and the protector of the provinces on his coins. He also earned the title Germanicus maximus for successfully defending Gaul against the Germans. His main objective was to restore and defend the Rhine frontier, achieving praise from ancient authors for reinstating security in the provinces. Notably, coins issued under Postumus had superior craftsmanship and higher precious metal content compared to those of Gallienus The South Petherton Hoard is a substantial assortment of Roman coins excavated on November 13, 2013, from farmland in South Petherton, Somerset, has been thoroughly documented by the British Museum. Subsequently, the coins were returned to the individual who discovered them and the landowner. Dating back to the late 3rd century AD, a tumultuous period in the Roman world known as the Crisis of the Third Century, the coins appear to have been hastily placed in a leather or cloth container and buried in the undergrowth around 274 AD. The owner, for reasons unknown, never returned to reclaim the treasure, leaving the coins concealed and forgotten for over 1,700 years until the moment when amateur archaeologist George Hughes made the remarkable discovery.
