Very large (28mm wide) copper coin of the Byzantine Empire....comes with clear plastic capsule as in photos.    The Ancient Roman Empire had the Western Roman Empire(based around Rome) and the Eastern Roman Empire(base around Constantinople, which is present day Istanbul).     The Western Roman Empire finally collapsed in 476 CE, but the Eastern Roman Empire lasted for about another 1000 years, until 1453 CE, in the time of Christopher Columbus. In case you're curious about the huge letter M on some Byzantine coins.......it is the denomination of the coin, in this case Greek numbering, with the M meaning 40(not 1000 as in Roman figures).   The numbering system was as follows...M=40.....K=20....I=10....and E=5. Congratulations....you now know more about ancient Byzantine coins than most people do.    The M meant 40 nummi (to nitpick, plural could be nummiae, and indeed, depending where you were, the coin could be a nummus or a nummia.Aren't you glad I've cleared that up?!), the nummi being a tiny bronze coin used since general Roman Empire times. So one could say that instead of being a 1c piece, this was a 40c piece.      What it really bought in those times is hard to work out,not only because of obvious factors, but prices varied greatly much like today from  country to country, labor demand, etc.,in different parts of the Empire.    These coins ....I don't have a book to work out the dates....but generally over 1000 years ago, say  somewhere between year 476 and year 1000.    So....about the time of these coins, a laborer in Constantinople might get from 3 to 5  nummi  per day, while a craftsman might get as many as 12.     One of the M coins might(depending where you were living) might buy you a modius of wheat(about 6.67 kg.). CONDITION.... as you can see in the photos....had been in circulation for years. Postage is FREE. ##########################################
