Pacific Clay Products Blended Glaze Blue Red and White Stoneware Bowl A stoneware bowl with a blue, red, and white blended glaze from Pacific Clay Products, circa late 1920s. Dimensions: 5-1/4" X 2-1/2" Condition: GREAT vintage used shape +++++ We know Pacific Pottery today for their Hostessware and other solid color California Coloreware dinnerware lines. But prior to releasing Hostessware in 1932, they made ceramic tile and stoneware for the residential housing market. When that began to wane they shifted production capacity to kitchen stoneware and artware. That's where these bowls come into play. Serving local farms and agriculture, Pacific made stoneware pitchers, bowls, mugs, and vases. In later years after the release of Hostessware, they would glaze them in similar single bright colors, but for some time they had different glaze styles. Many sellers, I've come to find, describe this as a drip glaze, but that would be incorrect. "Drip glaze" is pretty self-defined in its name and none of this glaze was applied as an intent for it to drip. These blended glazes were applied with a spray gun, and where the spray gun might apply the color chaotically, the placement of color is still controlled and intentional by the wielder of the spray gun. In the timeline of California Pottery, Pacific made these stoneware products for a relatively short period, perhaps less than 10 years. They were intended as utilitarian pieces, not artware, with even the vases intended to be used and not just displayed. Pacific's catalog of stoneware products from the late 1920s shows kitchen pitchers, various sizes of jars (stoneware containers), bowls, and vases available in the blended glaze. At one point these were highly collected but like most collectibles, subsequent generations have lost their connection to these things of the past and while there are still some collectors out there (you've read this far, haven't you?) but it isn't what it used to be. Pacific Clay Products Blended Glaze Blue, Red, and White Stoneware Bowl measures 5-1/4" X 2-1/2". It is in GREAT vintage, almost antique, used shape. There is an area on the foot where it looks like a portion chipped off. I think as part of the finishing process they smoothed the foot on a grinding wheel and they hit the foot at an angle. You can also see where there was a glaze bubble that popped during firing. Neither of these are considered damage since they were part of the production, but I understand how collectors value these less so I have deducted a small amount from the price. There is no crazing, cracks, or chips that I am able to find. A stunning piece of pre-California Pottery history.
